Printing from Nokia E65 on Windows based Printer

This document describes how to configure Windows and a Nokia E65 to print from the phone to Windows connected printers. This should also work with other S60 3rd devices.

Remark: It depends from your printer type and model if your are able to print pictures. I am currently only able to print text, because my Brother laser printer is not supported by the phone. Printing images may be possible with HP printers.

Prerequisites

1. Printer is connected to a Windows 2000 server (or any other Windows system, e.g. XP, but this is untested)

2. The Nokia E65 can connect to the Windows server mentioned above by TCP/IP (e.g. by WLAN)

Instruction
1. Install Print Services for Unix on the Windows system: Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs -> Add/Remove Windows Components -> Other Network File and Print Services -> Details -> Tick Print Services for Unix -> OK

2. Test if the Unix Print Services are working: Start a command line (cmd.exe) -> enter lpq -S -P

The output should be something like this:

If something stated like "could not connect", check firewall settings.

3. Create new printer in the Nokia E65: Menu -> Office -> Printer -> Options -> Add
a) Insert a name
b) Select driver as appropriate
c) Select LPR as connection
d) Select you Wireless Access Point
e) Enter the IP address of your Windows system as host
f) Leave user blank
g) Enter your printer name as queue

That's it.

I'm in the same way that michel, I have an E65 and I can't leave user blank, could anyone help us? Thanks.

Hhm, seems that you have a different Firmware, which does not allow to leave the username blank.

Could you please post the version of your firmware?

I almost made it!! But when the document drops into the printer-Queue, it gives a error then trying to print the document.

The printer recieves the dokument, the size of the .doc i correct but the file does not have a name, its just empty, its like it does not recognize the .doc

Any others out there with the same problem, tryed to print a .txt-file from the mobile, same result :(

Sorry, don't have a solution for that. Seems, that there are some other firmware versions out there, because of the user not allowed to be blank.

I don't have any explaination for not being able to print to other printers than my Brother, because I do not have access to other printers, but I assume, this has to do with a lack of LPR support of you printers...? Maybe you should simply try it with a different printer to see if you can reproduce the problem?

Best regards, moobekk

I had the same problem when trying to add a new printer to my Nokia E65, my solution was to edit the default printer which already has a blank username and has no asterix so no fields are mandatory. Hope this helps.

Hi Cuberob,

are you connected to your network via WLAN? Did you check, if you could connect (IP wise) to the server, where the printer is connected to?

I do not believe, that it fails because of the name.

My N95 8GB simply wont find the lexmark X4550 Wi fi printer. Why not? It searches for a bluetooth printer and comes up with my laptop but doesnt pick up the wi fi lexmark printer. Ive even turned the firewall off and tried it, no change. Please help...

Another site suggests using anything as username.

I am trying to print a 2 page word doc from my E51 to a Canon printer connected to my WinXP box. If I run lpq from command line immediately after I send the print job from the phone, the job is listed, but always as 0 pages. Job disappears and nothing prints.

Tried various usernames - anything seems to be accepted and the name used is listed as job owner.

I also tried printing the same doc to a HP network printer in the office. Only page 1 printed.
Print preview on the phone also only shows 1 page.
This leads me to believe that printing is not working 100% on the E51 with the current firmware (100.34.20).
